What is a Subdomain? How is it different from a domain?

These are some good questions!

What is a “Subdomain”?

Before I explain what a “subdomain” is I need to explain what a domain is. A domain is defined by Wikipedia as

A domain name is an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority or control within the Internet. Domain names are used in various networking contexts and for application-specific naming and addressing purposes.

That is tech talk for saying it is what you use to visit a website. It is what identifies each website. For example, Google.com is a domain, Wikipedia.com is a domain and so is CodingHelp.site.

How do I get my own domain?

Great question! You have 2 options: you can register a domain or you can get a free domain like .tk for example.

What does registering a domain mean?

That means that you pay for a domain to get it registered on the internet so you can use it with any hosting website. Examples of registered domains are the same as above: Google.com, Wikipedia.com, and CodingHelp.site.

There are several places you can go and while each website owner is going to have their own opinion on registrar’s the most popular ones are:

Best thing to do is to price out all of your options and decide what is best for you.

How can I get a free domain?

This is a popular option for new website owners and people who have never coded websites before. You can get a domain with Google Sites or Wix the problem with those is that they have long, complex names like https://sites.google.com/view/tech-experts-/home, for example.

Free domains can be registered for anywhere between 1 and 12 months with unlimited renewals and the renewals are free as well.

Examples of other free domains are .TK / .ML / .GA / .CF / .GQ

You can register .tk domains here: http://www.dot.tk/en/index.html?lang=en

You can register .ml domains here: http://www.dot.ml/en/index.html?lang=en

You can register .ga domains here: http://www.dot.ga/en/index.html?lang=en

You can register .cf domains here: http://www.dot.cf/en/index.html?lang=en

You can register .gq domains here: http://www.dominio.gq/en/index.html?lang=en

As you can see all of these domain types are country level domains, meaning they are for specific countries. Those countries just offer them for free which is why they are so popular with new owners.

The cons of having a free domain are that free domains are never really yours and you could lose them at any time.

Is a free domain better or a paid domain better?

It is up to you whether you would like a free or paid domain. They each have their pros and cons. No one can tell you which is better for you.

Back to the original question, what is a “subdomain”?

Right, let’s get back on track. A subdomain is an additional part to a domain name. They are created to organize and navigate to different sections of your website. You can create multiple subdomain on your main domain. An example subdomain would be: you.codinghelp.site

You can change the you to anything, it can be fart, frogs, erin, sam, no, etc. Doesn’t matter what it is. It can be any length as well. The only thing you have to remember is that spaces and underscores won’t work. So you can’t have a subdomain erin is the coolest.codinghelp.site nor can you have erin_is_the_coolest.codinghelp.site. Though you can use hyphens. This means you can have this: erin-is-the-coolest.codinghelp.site. The same thing is true for regular domain names.
